چکیده

We consider a two-sector economy with Cobb-Douglas technologies, laboraugmenting global external effects and increasing social returns. We prove the existence of a normalized balanced growth path and we give conditions for the occurrence of sunspot fluctuations that are compatible with both types of capital intensity configuration at the private level provided the elasticity of intertemporal substitution in consumption admits intermediary values. We finally show that the existence of period-two cycles requires the consumption good to be physical capital intensive at the private level.

Optimal Government Spending and Taxation in Three-Sector Endogenous Growth Model-Case Iran

The recent literature on taxation and growth has stressed the optimality of a zero long-run taxation on all accumulative factors of production. For a given path of government spending, the optimal tax plan requires the government to build up a positive stock of public wealth in the short run in the long-run, government spending can be financed with the income accruing from the management of the...

Too Much of a Good Thing: Endogenous Business Cycles generated by Bounded Technological Progress

Following Jones and Williams (2000), we assume that R&D is simultaneously subject to positive and to negative external effects (e.g., the non rival nature of technology conflicts with congestion externalities). This observation allows to conceive an economy where two R&D sectors evolve without departing significantly from each other in terms of their productive results (society tends to penaliz...

Indeterminacy with Progressive Taxation and Sector-Specific Externalities

This paper quantitatively examines the empirical plausibility of equilibrium indeterminacy and sunspot-driven cyclical fluctuations in a real business cycle model with two distinct production sectors that yield consumption and investment goods, together with separable or non-separable preferences. When calibrated to match the observed progressivity of the U.S. federal individual income tax sche...

Chaos and Sector-Specific Externalities

Benhabib and Farmer (1996) explore the possibility of local indeterminacy in a twosector model with sector-specific externalities. They find that very small sector-specific externalities are sufficient for local indeterminacy. In this case, it is possible to construct sunspot equilibria where extrinsic uncertainty matters. In this paper, I provide a global analysis of their model revealing the ...

Studies in Nonlinear Dynamics and Econometrics

We present a macroeconomic growth model in which investment in physical capital exhibits positive externalities which raise the stock of knowledge. Treating physical capital and knowledge as two separate variables, we show that the model can generate endogenous growth. It is demonstrated that there exist at most two balanced growth paths (BGPs) with endogenous growth. If the BGP is unique it is...
